Important Notes on Rohingya Discussion in Myanmar
Indonesia Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi at a meeting in Myanmar (Foto: AFP), Jakarta: Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi completed her bilateral visit to Myanmar, as one of the issues discussed being the Rohingya refugees.
The goal for this bilateral meeting is to discuss the elevation of both countries' relationship in various fields. In reform and democratization, FM Retno supports Myanmar's efforts in accelerating reform and democratization process.
Minister Retno had also brought up the irregular movement of persons issue, which recently has flooded the South East Asian region. Several important notes on the discussion are mentioned by the Foreign Ministry's release, Thursday (5/21/2015):
a. Myanmar government agrees to strengthen the measures in preventing irregular movement of migrants from its country.
b. Myanmar government is prepared to cooperate with regional nations in the eradication of human trafficking.
c. Myanmar government is to instruct its embassies to conduct consular visits to temporary settlements of migrants in Aceh.
d. Myanmar government also welcomes Indonesia's offer to build Rakhine in an inclusive and non-discriminative manner.
Minister Retno have also supported Myanmar's efforts to accelerate reform and democratization process, as she conveyed Indonesia's readiness in providing capacity support and cooperation, including to welcome the upcoming election in Myanmar.
Meanwhile on economic field, both ministers agreed to increase efforts on reaching trade targets of US$1 billion in 2016. Indonesian FM also offered trade cooperation to fulfill the needs of Myanmar in palm oil, fertilizers and farming equipment. 
With the rising number of Indonesian businessmen and investors in Myanmar, Indonesian FM also stated the importance of support in the field of people-to-people contact.
Both ministers have agreed to boost the strengthening of cooperation in the particular field. In this case, FM Retno asserted Indonesia's readiness to provide various capacity building and scholarship programs to Myanmar.
In the field of consular affairs, Myanmar FM conveyed his appreciation for indonesian government's assistance in handling Myanmar fishermen involved in Benjina case. In return, Indonesian FM expects the same cooperation in handling 55 Indonesian fishermen held custody in Yangon.
