Metrotvnews.com, Surabaya: Minister of Transportation Ignasius Jonan stated if Rupiah grows weaker against US Dollar, then the maintenance expenses will also increase.
Automatically, the price hike in transportation sector is inevitable. The ministry is unable to suppress the hike due to several reasons, among others the expenses for Holiday Allowances (THR) and overtimes for the employees.
"Our brothers having to take overtimes for Eid al-Fitr operations need to be paid attention to. For example, officials at the terminal, bus drivers, up to the train machinist, vessel crews having to serve in Eid al-Fitr, they usually work overtime, then their overtime will be paid," he stated following the opening of Airlangga International Accounting Conference 2015, in Bumi Hotel, Surabaya, East Java, Wednesday, June 3, 2015.
Jonan admitted he had conducted unscheduled inspections to several airports to ensure the preparation for the 2015 holiday travel. The inspection conducted in Cengkareng airport was for Lion and Sriwijaya Airlines. In the inspection, he evaluated the discipline and order of the airlines.
"For example, the rooms facing Airside are non-smoking. They should ban smoking in the rooms and the fire prevention safety equipment should be certified. We will keep reminding them," the former Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (tbk) mentioned.
Even so, Jonan said the weakening Rupiah against US Dollar has caused maintenance fee to rise according to obtained reports from the Central Statistic Agency, as it mentioned the transportation sector is the highest contributor in inflation, especially in East Java.
"So, as long as the Rupiah revolves around Rp13,000 against USD, and slowing down, the maintenance for transportation sector will increase as well. Surely this will increase ticket prices and also others," he explained.
Jonan explained that in transportation, the first philosophy is to ensure consumer safety. More so, all the requirements should be fulfilled as perfectly as possible. In providing good service, then the ticket price increase is a must.
"Our duties are to advice and regulate the changes of ticket process. If we should press it to avoid hike, it is not possible," he concluded. (Eps)
