Government's Mindset Regarding TPP is Wrong: Economist
Economist Faisal Basri, (Photo: MI/IMMANUEL ANTONIUS), Jakarta: The mindset of the government is considered to be mistaken as related to the idea of Indonesia joining the cooperative forum of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Why is it wrong? According to economist Faisal Basri, the urge of wanting to join TPP was without initial studies.

"They should have studied it first, then say whether they are interested or not, it is upside down (the government's mindset). This is complicated," said Faisal when met at a discussion titled 'Business world in between national interest and global competition' in Gado-Gado Boplo, Menteng, Jakarta, Saturday (11/14/2015).

Until today, every country conducting economic cooperation with foreign nation will have both benefits and loss. However, every nation has its own ways to reduce the loss from the trade cooperation.

The measures of each countries that can be prepared included the preparation of which production sectors to be competing with the incoming import products.

"For example, the least leading industries are given the chance to move into the leading industry. Therefore, there should be a social protection expenditure conducted in all countries as the anticipation of globalization. So, there are those benefited and loss," he affirmed.

Should Indonesia does not join TPP, then, according to Faisal, Indonesia will lose in competing with Vietnam and Malaysia, which are trade competitors of Indonesia.

"We went in last, the regulations have been established. We can't decide the playbook. It is the loss of we enter lastly," mentioned Faisal.
