Visitors at the Roppongi Hills, sky deck in Tokyo gazed into telescopes to see the total lunar eclipse on Tuesday evening. The total lunar eclipse was visible throughout North America in the predawn hours and across Asia, Australia and the rest of the pacific after sunset.

Known as a blood moon, the moon appeared a reddish-orange colour from the light of earth's sunsets and sunrises. At the peak of the eclipse, the moon was 400 thousand kilometers away according to NASA scientists.

According to the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan the last time a total lunar eclipse and planetary eclipse coincided was in July 1580 when the moon covered Saturn.
